Is VoIP a good home based business?

First, what is VoIP and why would VoIP be a good home based business.  VoIP is a way of sending Voice over the Internet, so instead of using traditional copper telephone lines the signal travels like a web page, over the World Wide Web.  This technology reduces the cost of phone calls and allows for many more features as part of the service.  It is a good home business for several reasons, three of which are the income is residual, the customer base is huge and the service offers more and costs less.
Most VoIP service providers allow free calls between subscribers who have signed up for their service and also have plans that allow for unlimited calling both locally and long distance.  Some offer services with special access codes, while others have small devices that have a two plug-in ports to use, one for a phone the other for your broadband Internet connection.

Making a home based business from home gives you control over your schedual. Many VoIP service providers have agent, affiliate and reseller or even wholesaler programs as part of their marketing strategy.  These programs are ideal for individuals to start a home based business.  When someone who you have signs up and buys the service they pay you a fee.  Then you collect residual payments on additional monthly fees charged the customer, (their monthly phone service charge), as well as any additional purchases which can include additional add on services (some providers offer call queues or faxing services for a small additional fee), International call minutes, extra lines or extra hardware, and virtual lines, etc.
VoIP providers typically offer resellers their own replicated website where their customers sign up for service.  Customers that sign up under you, are “your customers” and you get a percentage of their residual account.
Being a reseller means that as your customer base increases, your income also increases.

If this business model appeals to you need to consider a few items when choosing a VoIP provider to align with.  The most important considerations overall are the compensation plan that the provider offers, as well as their financial stability and quality of their service.  You don’t want to work hard for a strong customer base only to loose it if the provider goes under or gets taken over by another provider with new less favorable rules begin to apply.  And you want to pick a provider who offers reliable service which will prevent customer drop out or churn.
Some other considerations would be what type of services do they offer.  Are they strictly residential or do they offer a small business solution, something that can significantly increase your income.  Do they have International calling plans and low International rates?  Lots of VoIP sales are made to International callers.   And finally features, which are what will sell a service after initial price savings.

If all this sounds good, then you also need to consider that VoIP is a new technology, and although it has gone main stream and many people are aware of it, it is still a better business for people who like technology and feel comfortable with it.  If that's you then you may want to consider it.
